Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur…
The nihil obstat and imprimatur are a declaration that a book is considered to be free from doctrinal or moral error. It is not implied that those who have granted the nihil obstat and imprimatur agree with the contents, opinions or statements expressed.
nihil obstat means “nothing stands out” or “nothing objectionable.” Typically, a Church theologian or scholar will review the material and declare the nihil obstat.
imprimatur means “let it be printed.”
Only a Bishop has the authority to declare the imprimatur after the material has been approved and found doctrinally and morally sound.
