LIFE EVENTS

2008-2009

Through our baptismal promises we are mandated to continue to learn and grow in our faith.  LIFE Events are a way the parish of St. Monica’s learns together, prays together, gets to know each other, and celebrates!  These events are an opportunity to share who we are and how we live as Catholics.  LIFE Events are designed for all ages and stages of faith development.  This brochure describes each event so that your family may select the ones most appropriate.

Religious education students enrolled in grades one through eight are expected to attend 8 of these events.

Parents maintain each child’s LIFE Event attendance record on the 2008-09 Student LIFE Event Attendance Record form.

Completed forms must be turned in no later than May 31, 2009.

SCHEDULED LIFE EVENTS

First Friday Holy Hour

Come before the Lord to adore Jesus in the Eucharist for Children’s Holy Hour on the 1st Friday of any month at 4:00pm.  Students may receive only ONE Holy Hour LIFE Event credit per year.

Creed

Every weekend during Mass, we stand and recite the Nicene Creed, but how often do we think about the things that we say “we believe?”  Come explore what this treasure of the Church means and how we are to live it.

Blessing of Athletes

Our physical exercise has purpose.  It is a gift that makes our bodies, minds and spirits healthy.  This event is a way to emphasize and empower us to always be virtuous as athletes, fans, coaches and officials.  Wear your athletic attire for this special blessing.

Blessing of Animals

Celebrate the Feast of St. Francis at St. Monica’s annual Blessing of the Animals at the field beside the church.  Bring your pet, and enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow parishioners.

Living Rosary

Join us for an evening designed to help all of us enjoy this wonderful devotion to our Lady in a different format.  We share the “why” and “how” of praying this ancient prayer.  Family members should bring their rosaries.

Saints Alive

Learn about the saints of our faith, who lived lives full of faith, grace and generosity.  Interested in modeling in our "Saints Fashion Show."  Sign up sheets for models will be available in the foyer of the RE building 1 month prior to the event.

Advent Traditions

This event is an open-house format from 10AM-1PM.  Families will create Advent crafts and develop an Advent plan. Sign up for your family activity in the religious education building 1 month prior to the event.  There will be a small materials charge for some activities. One activity per family, please.

Lessons & Carols

Celebrate the coming of Jesus through word and song at our "Festival of Lessons and Carols."  The story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in short Bible readings, interspersed with the singing of Advent carols and hymns.

Movie Night

Join together as a community and enjoy an inspirational and faith-filled movie.  Watch the bulletin for details.  Approximately 1 1/2 hours.

Lenten Traditions

This event is an open house format from 10AM-1PM.  Families will create Lenten crafts and develop a Lenten plan. Sign up for your family activity in the religious education building 1 month prior to the event.  There will be a small materials charge for some activities. One activity per family, please.

Stations of the Cross

When we journey with Jesus on the Way of the Cross, we learn what real love is, what it requires of us and how it gives us hope.  Families can participate any Friday during Lent .  Students may receive only ONE Stations of the Cross LIFE Event credit per year.

Seder Supper

Experience a traditional family Seder meal, through prayers, food and music.

Limited seating, admission is by ticket only.  Ticket information will be available in the February bulletin.  Approx. 1 1/2 hours.  Appropriate for students in grade 2 and up.

Passion of Our Lord

Through Scripture readings and the animated film, The Proud Tree, we retell the culmination of Jesus’ ministry and life on earth and revisit the agony of death in order to prepare for the miracle of resurrection.

Swieconka (Blessing of Easter Food)

This LIFE Event celebrates the Polish tradition of blessing the foods to be eaten at the Easter Dinner. Bring your Easter dinner food to be blessed.  Weather permitting, this event will take place outside in the back parking lot.

May Crowning

At this event, we honor Mary, who was the humble servant of the Lord and gave herself completely to her Son and his work.  First Communicants are invited to lead the procession.  All participants are asked to bring a flower to place before the statue of Mary.

Pentecost

We remember how the coming of the Holy Spirit transformed the lives of the apostles and how the Spirit can transform us today .  We too are people of the Holy Spirit, called to share the good news of Jesus Christ with others, to be Pentecost people.

TAKE HOME LIFE EVENTS

Pick up Take Home LIFE Event forms from the counter in the RE building.

Follow instructions on form.  Complete the Take Home form and return to the RE office with

the 2008-09 Student LIFE Event Attendance Record form no later than May 31, 2009.

Elijah Cup

The scheduled family will be called to the altar to receive the Elijah Cup from the priest or deacon at the end of Mass.  During the week, the family will pray for an increased call to vocations to the priesthood as well as pray for current priests and deacons.

Sacramental Moment

If your family is attending a Catholic sacramental celebration you can turn it into a faith learning experience.

Service Project

Because every human being is made in the image and likeness of God, each person has infinite value.  Our love for God must translate into a love for all people and a commitment to treat them justly through service.
